Today is the 47th Annual Earth Day.
Earth Day was started in 1969 in response to a oil spill off the coast of California.
And, since then, it has grown into a worldwide event meant to protect the environment.
I think Earth Day started with the best intentions.
I strongly believe in protecting the environment.
So much so, that I started a company.
And there is a lot of value in Earth Day.
It raises awareness about environmental issues.
It’s an opportunity to teach our children about our obligation as stewards.
And common things that people do on Earth Day include collecting garbage and planting trees
I’m all for collecting garbage and planting trees.
But the thing I hate about Earth Day is the hypocrisy.
People take advantage of it to show how virtuous they are.
Hollywood celebrities fly on private jets, blowing massive carbon into the atmosphere.
Just so that they can preach to US, YOU AND ME, that we NEED TO DO SOMETHING!!
How about flying coach, buddy?
The other problem I have is that Earth Day makes it so that we only think about the environment once per year.
And that is real shame.
Because the ONLY way that we can positively affect the environment is if we make good decisions EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Not just once a month in April.
